Osceola Refinery
521 North Park Street
Reed City, MI
ID #: 67000076
|
|
LOCATION: The site is located on the north side of the City of Reed City just outside the city limits. The site is located on approximately 30 acres of land. The land surrounding the site is primarily residential property.
SITE HISTORY: A crude oil refinery operated at this location from approximately 1942 through 1963. A retail and wholesale petroleum sales operation currently exists on a portion of the former refinery property. An investigation of a leaking underground storage tank at the petroleum sales location revealed petroleum contamination from an upgradient source. The State conducted a remedial investigation of the former refinery and discovered contaminated soil and groundwater at the site. Petroleum products were also discovered on top of the groundwater.
CLEANUP ACTIONS: Over $1,006,000 in CMI and CRF funds have been spent at this site since 2001 to remove petroleum free product from the top of the groundwater, excavate and dispose of contaminated soil, which is acting as a source area for the groundwater contamination, and perform a groundwater remediation evaluation.
REDEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL: The property is owned by several different individuals. Some portions of the facility are currently being considered for redevelopment as residential homes.
