Termination of Insurance Licenses

Michigan does not place licenses in “escrow”. Licenses are issued on a perpetual basis. To keep your license active as a resident, obtain any required continuing education. To keep your license active as a non-resident, you must remain in good standing in your home state.

Licenses may be inactivated for the following reasons:

  1. Request of the licensee. A licensee may decide to retire from the insurance business or leave the state of Michigan. To voluntarily surrender a license, the licensee should return the original license to us accompanied by a signed and dated letter.  If the licensee no longer has the license document, the licensee must state in writing that he or she will not attempt to operate as a licensee.  If the licensee is transferring states and plans on selling in the new state, the licensee will need to ask for a letter of clearance (see – Document Requests).
  2. Individual producer or solicitor failure to meet continuing education requirements. If continuing education is required, the date is listed on the license document. If the licensee does not earn the required credits by the designated date, the licensee has 90 days to earn the credits without further action. If the credits are not earned in that 90 day period, the license is terminated and the licensee has 12 months from the original date of CE suspension in which to reapply without retaking prelicensing and the examination. If an individual is licensed for Surplus Lines and no longer has active property and casualty or accident and health qualifications, the SL license will likewise be made inactive.
  3. Death. If a licensee has died, a relative or business associate should notify us by letter and include a copy of the death certificate.
  4. Administrative action. If the license is terminated for administrative action as a result of violations of the Michigan Insurance Code, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners Producer Database (PDB) is also notified.
  5. Dissolution of a licensed business enterprise. To notify us of a dissolution, the licensee must send a letter and include the effective date and an original signature.
