Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today met with the Grand Valley
State University’s (GVSU) Division II national champion women’s
volleyball and men’s football teams. The Governor presented each
team with a tribute congratulating them on their achievements during the 2005
season.
“These young men and women are leaders on and off the field,” Granholm said. “Their hard work and commitment to teamwork is a great reflection of Grand Valley State University and the state of Michigan, and we congratulate them on their success this season.”
The GVSU women’s volleyball team defeated number one-ranked University of Nebraska to win the 2005 NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Championship. This was the first national championship for the GVSU women’s volleyball team, as well as the first national championship won by any women’s team at the university. Coach Deanne Scanlon, named this year’s Tachikara/AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year, led the team to an impressive 32-6 overall record.
The GVSU football team defeated Northwest Missouri State to win the 2005 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The team, led by head coach Chuck Martin, finished its season with a perfect 13-0 record en route to its third national championship in four years. Martin was named this year’s AFCA DII Coach of the Year.
