Contact:  Megan Brown 517-335-6397

April 23, 2008

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the appointment of Sharon Bommarito as director of the Office of the State Employer, effective May 19.  In this position, Bommarito will oversee all collective bargaining, labor-management relations, and other employee services for more than 50,000 state workers in Michigan.

"Sharon is a results-oriented leader with a strong work ethic and untiring enthusiasm," Granholm said.  "I am confident that she will represent the state of Michigan with great integrity on a variety of labor-management issues."

Bommarito, 57 of Lansing, has worked as deputy director for the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth since 2006.  She originally joined the department as director of the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA).

Prior to joining UIA, Bommarito was director of personnel for the city of Lansing.  She was also special assistant and deputy director of personnel in Governor James Blanchard's administration.

Bommarito earned her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University.  She replaces M. Scott Bowen who was recently appointed the Michigan state lottery commissioner.

This appointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
