September 5, 2003

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm will attend the kick-off for the Habitat for Humanity Detroit Blitz Build 2003, which includes the “Governor’s State of Michigan House,” on Saturday, September 6, at 7 a.m.

The kick-off will take place at the build site in “Tri-Centennial Village” just west of Tiger Stadium on the corner of Williams and Ash streets, off of Martin Luther King Blvd in Detroit.

Governor Granholm will give brief remarks and will proceed to the build site for the “Governor’s State of Michigan House,” where she will help raise the walls and participate in the construction of the house

Blitz Build 2003 will start Saturday and ends on Saturday, September 13th with a house dedication ceremony. Over the course of the week a total of 120 state employees, 20 per day, will volunteer. The house is being built for Winifred Jones and his three children. He is the first single father selected to be a recipient of a Habitat for Humanity Detroit house.

“This is such a great opportunity for me and other state employees to give back to the community and to make a difference in the life of a Michigan family,” Granholm said.  “Habitat for Humanity brings the community together to revitalize neighborhoods and also provides decent, affordable homes for those who are in need of a secure roof over their head.”

Masco Corporation has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to sponsor the “Governor’s House.” On Saturday, Masco will dedicate the construction of the “Governor’s House” to Granholm, who will in turn, dedicate the building of the house to the State of Michigan and the employees that will be working through the week. She will re-name the house and call it the “Governor’s State of Michigan House.”

During the week, families, sponsors and volunteers will help build 16 houses on one city block. The families who qualified for a house will work along side volunteers to witness and participate the building of their home. The families purchase the homes through zero percent-interest mortgages, to help provide a better life for themselves and their families.
