Governor Granholm Makes Appointments

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments and reappointments to the Michigan Environmental Science Board, the Underwater Salvage and Preserve Committee, and the Michigan Aquatic Nuisance Species Council:

Michigan Environmental Science Board

Philip Zazove, M.D. of Ann Arbor, medical director of MCare and professor of family medicine for the University of Michigan Medical School.  Dr. Zazove is appointed to represent individuals with expertise in human medicine for a term expiring August 6, 2008.  He succeeds Dr. Raymond Demers whose term has expired.

Bette J. Premo, B.S., M.S., Ph.D., of Amasa, CEO of White Water Associates, Inc.  Dr. Premo is reappointed to represent individuals with expertise in ecological science for a term expiring August 6, 2008.

The Michigan Environmental Science Board is an independent, autonomous state agency established in 1992 to provide scientific and technical advice to the Governor on matters affecting the protection and management of environmental and natural resources.
 
These appointments are not subject to disapproval.

Underwater Salvage and Preserve Committee

Mark S. Kistner of St. Clair Shores, attorney in private practice.  Mr. Kistner is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring August 17, 2007.  He fills a vacant seat on the committee.

Peggy S. Kurpinski of Holland, president of Adventures in Diving, Inc.  Ms. Kurpinski is appointed to represent a member of the general public having experience in recreational scuba diving for a term expiring August 17, 2007.  She succeeds Valerie van Heest whose term has expired.

Brian L. Tippman of Alpena, owner of Dive Alpena, Inc.  Mr. Tippman is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring August 17, 2007.  He succeeds John McConnell whose term has expired.

Gail A. Vander Stoep, Ph.D. of East Lansing, associate professor with the Michigan State University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.  Dr. Vander Stoep is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring August 17, 2007.  She succeeds Michael Spears whose term has expired.

Peter J. Lindquist of Munising, developer and president of Munising Bay Shipwreck Tours, Inc., also known as Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours.  Mr. Lindquist is reappointed to represent a member of the general public having experience in recreational scuba diving for a term expiring August 17, 2007.

The Underwater Salvage and Preserve Committee advises the Departments of History, Arts & Libraries and Environmental Quality on the responsibilities associated with maintaining Michigan’s 13 underwater preserves.  The committee also makes recommendations in regard to the creation and boundaries of Great Lakes underwater preserves, reviews and recommends issuance of applications for underwater salvage permits, and provides input regarding the charging of permit fees and the appropriate use of revenue generated.
 
These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Aquatic Nuisance Species Council

Jason C. Dinsmore of Haslett, resource policy specialist with Michigan United Conservation Clubs.  Mr. Dinsmore is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 16, 2007.

Tim A. Eder of Chelsea, director of water resources with the National Wildlife Federation.  Mr. Eder is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 16, 2007.

The Michigan Aquatic Nuisance Species Council advises the Office of the Great Lakes and the Departments of Environmental Quality, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Transportation on the state’s efforts to prevent and control the introduction and spread of aquatic nuisance species within Michigan.  It also coordinates research and monitoring activities pertaining to aquatic nuisance species, and makes revision and updates to Michigan’s Aquatic Nuisance Species State Management Plan, as necessary.
 
These reappointments are not subject to disapproval.
