February 27, 2009

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that John E. Mogk of Grosse Pointe Park has been appointed to the Council for Labor and Economic Growth to represent business for a term expiring April 30, 2009, and reappointed for a term expiring April 30, 2013.  He succeeds Kenneth Baker who has resigned.

Mogk, chairman of the board and a principal shareholder of Starlight Mobile Home Park, Inc. and a professor of law at Wayne State University specializing in the areas of property, energy, land use, and urban development, is also designated to serve as chair of the council for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.  He succeeds Marjorie Sorge as chair.

The Council for Labor and Economic Growth serves as the state's workforce investment board required under Section 111 of the Federal Workforce Investment Act of 1998.  Additionally, the council is charged with assessing trends and issues, developing strategies, and acting as an ongoing strategic advising body that encourages and stimulates innovative public and private responses to workforce challenges.  Members work to develop policies and help implement programs that shape a flexible 21st century workforce that meets the needs of Michigan's businesses and allows them to successfully compete in the global marketplace today and in the future.

This appointment/reappointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
