Lists and Maps of Michigan's Designated Health Professional Shortage Areas:
The lists and maps below show all Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) desingations listed with a designation status of "Designated" according to the federal government. For many federal programs, this list can be used to determine eligibility that is based on a HPSA designation. Some state and federal programs vary in their designation requirements and some of those variances are described under the major headings below.
Special Information for the Michigan State Loan Repayment Program:
HPSA designations are required to be reviewed on a 4 year cycle and for that reason, designations periodically change from a designated status to a "Proposed Withdrawal" or "No Data Provided" designation status. Designations with these status indicators are still HPSA designations until a federal register notice is printed documenting that they are no longer eligible for HPSA designation. Utilization of HPSA designations with a non-designated status is a programmatic decision and recently, the Michigan State Loan Repayment Program (MSLRP) made the determination to offer loan repayment to communities with HPSA status other than designated. Below are maps that show areas in which MSLRP will offer loan repayment, as well as lists of those areas that have MSLRP eligibility, but not National Health Service Corps (NHSC) eligibility.
Special Information for Rural Health Clinic Certification:
In addition to geographic and population group HPSA designations granted or updated within the past 4 years (listed in the maps and lists at the top of the page), Rural Health Clinic (RHC) certification can occur in State Governor Certified Shortage Areas for the RHC Program. Below you can find a list and map of the State Governor Certified Shortage Areas in Michigan designated within the past 4 years.
List and Map of Michigan's Designated Medically Underserved Areas and Populations:
Medically Underserved Area and Population (MUA/P) designations are distinct from Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designations. MUA/P designations are used in determining eligibility for the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) program among others. Below is a list and map of current MUA/P designations in Michigan.
