Michigan Recognizes Older Workers

September 5, 2008

In honor of older workers and their contributions to our state, the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging (OSA) encourages citizens to observe 2008 National Employ Older Workers Week, September 21-27.

"We benefit from older workers who continue to live productive lives through their jobs," notes Sharon Gire, Director of the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging. "Because our older population will grow dramatically in the years ahead, we must continue to find ways to engage them in work that will keep them active, and supplement their retirement income."

Employ Older Workers Week is an important opportunity for elected officials, employers and the general public to recognize and understand the important role older workers play in the labor force.

With their labor skills and experience, strong work ethic, flexibility and dedication, older workers are a valuable asset to their employers and communities. They are playing an increasingly important part in maintaining our economy in the global marketplace.

National Employ Older Workers Week highlights the success of the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) administered by the US Department of Labor. SCSEP funds the Michigan Older American Community Service Employment Program.

This program provides part-time opportunities for training and employment for limited income adults, age 55 and older. Since it began more than 40 years ago, SCSEP has helped more than 1 million people each year enter the job market by developing job skills that correspond to the rapidly changing demands of the business sector.
