December 8, 2008

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) today announced the launch of the Medical Marihuana Program (MMP) Web site, which is designed to inform residents and health professionals about the administrative rules and procedures pertaining to the use of medicinal marihuana.

The MMP Web site, www.michigan.gov/mmp, provides comprehensive information on the Medical Marihuana Act, the proposed administrative rules and the requirements to apply to the program. The site also features frequently asked questions and program status updates.

"We certainly empathize with those who are suffering from a debilitating illness," said MDCH Director Janet Olszewski. "The new Web site is especially clear on how the program will function and it serves as a valuable resource for health professionals, caregivers and patients who are seeking alternatives to help relieve the chronic pain associated with many conditions."

Though the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act went into effect on Dec. 4, the law allows MDCH to set up the program on April 4, when the administrative rules are expected to go into effect. MDCH will hold a public hearing for the proposed rules at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at the State Secondary Complex, General Office Building, 7150 Harris Drive, Conference Room A in Lansing. The public hearing is being held only to receive comments on the proposed rules for implementing a registration program for the medical use of marihuana. An individual who requires accommodations in order to participate in the hearing should call Laurie VanBeelen at (517) 335-1341 to make the necessary arrangements.

The proposed rules are posted on the Web site. Applications to apply to the program will be available once the program begins in April. Additional refinements to the site will continue in order to ensure it remains easily accessible and simple to navigate.
