In honor of Michigan's older work force, the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging (OSA) encourages employers to observe 2010 National Employ Older Worker Week, September 19-25.

"Michigan has benefited significantly from the skills and talents of older workers," says Sharon Gire, OSA Director. "We must continue to support opportunities to employ them in meaningful work that will keep them active, healthy, and supplement their retirement income."

Because of their experience, skills, dependability and strong work ethic, older workers are a valuable asset to employers and communities. Furthermore, they also support local economies by investing their earnings in the marketplace. By 2014, it is estimated that 41 percent of those aged 55 and older will be employed. This will make up over 21 percent of the workforce.

National Employ Older Worker Week showcases the success of Michigan's Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which is administered with funds from the U.S. Department of Labor. SCSEP provides job training and part-time employment opportunities for limited income older adults.

Since it began 45 years ago, SCSEP has helped more than one million older workers develop job skills which match the rapidly changing demands of the workforce.
