A doula is a trained birth professional who helps families have safe, healthy and positive birth experiences. Doulas provide non-clinical emotional, physical, and informational support to pregnant people and their families before, during, and after birth.

Michigan Medicaid coverage of doula services is published in the bulletin Medicaid Coverage of Doulas (MMP 22-47) and the Medicaid Provider Manual. In October 2024, MMP 24-40 increased the number of visits and reimbursement rates for doula services.

The Michigan Doula Advisory Council works to inform the advancement of doula services in Michigan as a result of the Medicaid doula reimbursement policy. The Michigan Doula Advisory Council includes representation from doulas across the state of Michigan. The Council membership represents, to the extent possible, the various communities and settings in which doula services are provided.
