LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today applauded passage of her Local Jobs Today plan.  The three-bill package was overwhelmingly approved by both Houses of the Michigan Legislature, paving the way for the creation of more than 7,000 jobs and $400 million in accelerated road and transit projects.  The Local Jobs Today plan was first announced by the Governor and the original bill sponsor, Senator Mike Prusi (D-Ishpeming) in March as an effort to improve local road and transit facilities.

“This plan will put people to work, improve local roads, and strengthen economic development efforts in communities across Michigan,” said Governor Granholm.  “I appreciate the strong bipartisan support this plan received in the Legislature.”

The Local Jobs Today plan provides grants and loans to cities, counties, and local transit agencies, enabling them to take advantage of available federal transportation funding and create more than 7,100 jobs in Michigan in 2006 and 2007.

The Local Jobs Today plan is just one component of Granholm’s Jobs Today Initiative.  First announced in 2005, Jobs Today is a $3.5 billion investment in accelerating critical infrastructure and renovation projects over the next three years.  Accelerated projects include environmental cleanup sites, nursing home renovations, sewer upgrades and transportation projects.

Senate Bill 1132 was sponsored by Senator Mike Prusi (D-Ishpeming); Senate Bill 1192 was sponsored by Senator Jud Gilbert (R-Algonac); and House Bill 6003 was sponsored by Representative Tom Casperson (R-Escanaba).
