First District Receives New Commander

EAST LANSING. Michigan State Police Director Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant has announced the assignment of Captain Dan Smith as commander of the First District. Prior to his transfer, he served as commander of the Special Operations Division.

As commander of the First District, Smith oversees the operations of eight posts. The district encompasses 13 counties in central and lower central Michigan, including the state Capitol and all state properties.

Smith joined the department in 1977, and was a graduate of the 90th Recruit School. In his 27-year career, Smith has served at the Benton Harbor, Bay City, Bridgeport and Ionia posts. He has also served in the Traffic Services Section, the Sixth District Headquarters in Grand Rapids, the Uniform Services Bureau and the Special Operations Division. Before joining the department, Smith was a deputy for the Alpena County Sheriff’s Department and a police officer for the Portage City Police Department.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement from Ferris State University and an associate’s degree in law enforcement from Alpena Community College. He resides in Grand Ledge with his wife, Patty, and children, Nick, Chris, and Theresa.
