Connectivity to the State's Network

There are many ways to connect to the state's network which provides access to the MiCJIN portal and allows the transmission of fingerprints over a Livescan device.  An agency can use the State's LGNet/POP connection or various Internet connections. Internet connections include dial-up modem, broadband cable, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), satellite broadband, or Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).

MiCJIN Security Issues:

To expedite the approval process, each agency must submit a security diagram that depicts the agency's communications network, Internet connectivity, and connections to other agencies including the State of Michigan. If the capability exists for agency workstations to access the Internet the agency must protect that access using a CJIS (Criminal Justice Information System) certified firewall. The agency's security diagram must depict the Internet access and the brand and model of firewall used to protect the connection. If an agency maintains a closed network that does not provide Internet access it should be so noted on the diagram.  Agencies maintaining networks with Internet connectivity who wish to obtain CJIS access, will not be approved unless a CJIS certified firewall has been installed to protect their Internet connection.

Individual users requesting access to the MiCJIN software systems via a direct Internet connection must protect their PCs with either a dedicated firewall or a personal firewall such as Zone Labs ZoneAlarm, McAfee Firewall, or Norton Personal Firewall. Users with this type of standalone Internet connectivity can submit a memo attesting to use of a personal firewall in lieu of a network diagram.
