LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:
Governor's Task Force on Children's Justice
The Honorable Judy A. Hartsfield of Detroit, judge of the 3rd Judicial Circuit Court, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2010.
Frederick A. Johansen, M.D. of St. Joseph, medical director of Berrien County Health Department, is reappointed to represent health professionals for a term expiring June 30, 2011.
The Governor's Task Force on Children's Justice is responsible for the review and evaluation of the handling of child abuse cases in Michigan. It also makes recommendations to the governor on potential courses of action that, if taken, would improve the efficiency of the current system in order to better protect children, punish abusers, and enhance the laws governing child abuse while ensuring due process of law to all parties involved.
These reappointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
Citizen-Community Emergency Response Coordinating Council
Marcia A. Varble of Bellaire, Bellaire service center manager of the American Red Cross of Northern Lower Michigan, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
William D. Wagoner of Royal Oak, director of planning for Livingston County, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
Stewart C. Wang, M.D., Ph.D. of Ann Arbor, director of the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center and professor of surgery, is reappointed to represent individuals with technical expertise related to emergency response for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
The Citizen-Community Emergency Response Coordinating Council is responsible for developing and implementing emergency response and hazard mitigation plans for the state. The council acts as the state emergency response commission as required by federal statute.
These reappointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority
Harvey Hollins, III of Belleville, vice president of government and community affairs at Wayne State University, is reappointed to represent Wayne State University for a term expiring May 22, 2013.
Jonathan D. Liebman of West Bloomfield, president and CEO of Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts, Inc., is reappointed to represent private occupational schools of this state for a term expiring May 22, 2013.
Reverand Bruce A. McCoy of Grand Rapids, senior pastor of Bibleway Outreach Ministries, is reappointed to represent citizens of the state with an interest in higher education for a term expiring May 22, 2013.
Marshall (Dick) Shaink, Ph.D. of Flint, president and CEO of Mott Community College, is reappointed to represent community colleges of this state for a term expiring May 22, 2013.
The Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority enhances freedom of choice and equality of access to Michigan students seeking a postsecondary education. It also administers a wide variety of state and federal scholarships and grant and loan programs.
These reappointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Women's Commission
Emily Stoddard Furrow of Walker, associate with DVQ Studio, is reappointed for a term expiring July 15, 2012.
Judith S. Rosenberg of Birmingham, retired property manager of Dunitz Management Company, is reappointed for a term expiring July 15, 2012.
Estelle P. Smyth of Escanaba, owner/public relations consultant/operator of Ideas Unlimited, is reappointed for a term expiring July 15, 2012.
Mary Alice Williams of Grand Rapids, retired president and CEO of Arbor Circle Corp., is reappointed for a term expiring July 15, 2012.
Gloria A. Woods of Bay City, community activist and civic volunteer, is reappointed for a term expiring July 15, 2012.
The Michigan Women's Commission focuses on improving quality of life for women in the state by studying and reviewing the status of Michigan women, directing attention to critical issues that women face, recommending methods to overcome discrimination, promoting methods for women to develop their skills, conducting surveys and establishing advisory committees on vital issues, and recognizing the accomplishments of women in Michigan.
These reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Park Authority Board of Commissioners
John C. Hertel of Lenox Township, CEO of Regional Transportation Coordinating Council, is reappointed to represent electors of the Metropolitan district for the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority for a term expiring May 2, 2013.
The Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority facilitates the operation and maintenance of parks, connecting drives, and limited access highways within the metropolitan district that includes Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne Counties. The authority has the ability to collect fees and charges for the usage of facilities under its control.
This reappointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Commission of Agriculture
Charles Velmar Green of Elsie, a Republican, president of Green Meadow Farms, Inc., is appointed for a term expiring December 31, 2012. He succeeds Dale Norton whose term has expired.
The Commission of Agriculture provides oversight and executive direction for the programs administered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Apple Marketing Program Committee
Brian D. Putney of Benzonia, vice president of Putney Beef or Fruit, Inc., is appointed to represent District 6 growers for a term expiring April 1, 2012. He succeeds Mark Doherty whose term has expired.
Alvin F. Dietrich of Conklin, owner/partner of Ridgeview Orchards, is reappointed to represent District 3 growers for a term expiring April 1, 2012.
The Michigan Apple Marketing Program Committee represents farm families involved in the growing, packing, shipping and processing of Michigan apples. It creates advertising and promotional programs and establishes and supports research designed to improve the overall effectiveness of the program.
These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Beef Marketing Program Committee
Daniel M. Javor of Hastings, partner of Burdock Hill Dairy, LLC, is reappointed to represent dairy farmers for a term expiring May 31, 2012.
Dale R. Oeschger of Bay Port, owner and head farmer of Lindale Farms, is reappointed to represent cattle feeders for a term expiring May 31, 2012.
The Michigan Beef Marketing Program Committee represents over 14,000 farm families involved in the production, raising and feeding of beef and dairy cattle and is charged with promoting the sale of beef and beef products.
These reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
