LANSING - The Michigan Corrections Organization (MCO) today announced that the membership of its bargaining unit has ratified the tentative agreement reached in January with the Office of the State Employer.
The agreement achieves MCO's approximate $8.2 million share of the $50 million in employee savings assumed in the fiscal year 2010 state budget and provides structural change through a new health-care plan for employees hired after April 1, 2010.
"This is a groundbreaking agreement," said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. "I appreciate the understanding and willingness of the Michigan Corrections Organization members to help us address the budgetary challenges we face during these tough economic times by approving this agreement."
"It was not an easy road, but at the end of the day, MCO members stepped up to the plate again to help deal with budget shortfalls," said Mel Grieshaber, executive director of MCO.
The MCO represents approximately 8,300 state employees in the departments of Corrections and Community Health.
