  • Keyword
  • Subject
  • Headnote text
  • Opinion number
  • Opinion date

Dates can be formatted as January 2, 1963 or 1963-01-02. Search only numerals for an opinion number, i.e. 4027.

Elements of an Opinion

A published Attorney General opinion has a standard format. The elements present in every opinion are

  • Keywords
  • Subjects
  • Headnote
  • Opinion number
  • Opinion date
  • Name of Requester
  • Body of the opinion

Browse Indexes

If you are not sure what keyword or phrase to search for, you may want to browse the Indexes to Formal Opinions. The indexes contain an alphabetical list of keywords and subjects by which opinions were categorized.

Browse Reports

Another option for finding an opinion is to browse the Michigan Attorney General Biennial Reports. You can perform a keyword search within the PDF of a single report to search through all the published opinions for that two-year period. We recommend downloading the file for a quicker full-text search.
