Send a Prisoner a Package
The public may send a prisoner a package of items that have been pre-authorized through the Friends and Family Program (FFP), also known as SecurePak. Prisoners may also place their own orders through this program at a kiosk available in their housing unit.
Only one order may be placed per quarter (Jan–Mar, Apr–Jun, Jul–Sep, Oct–Dec). It is important to communicate with the prisoner before placing an order to ensure they have not personally placed one that quarter, or plan to receive an order from someone else. Only the first order placed each quarter will be processed.
There is a limit of $100, not including tax and shipping, per FFP order placed. To select and send items in a package, you must register and check out at www.michiganpackages.com.
Prisoners may not receive packages from another prisoner, parolee, probationer. They also cannot receive packages from a family member of a prisoner, parolee, or probationer, unless it is one of their own personal family members. Prisoners in segregation are not eligible to receive FFP orders. For additional information and policies regarding this program, see PD 04.02.135 - FFP Program.
Send a Prisoner a Book or Publication
Prisoners may receive publications ordered by members of the public from the following vendors, provided the publication is not used and is sent directly to the prisoner from the vendor:
Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Hamilton Books, Prison Legal News, Schuler Books, Walmart, American Printing House for the Blind (for prisoners who read braille)
Some approved vendors, like Amazon, allow other sellers to use their website to sell publications. Prisoners are not allowed to receive publications from these sellers, unless they are on the approved list above (ex. Hamilton Books selling books on Amazon.com).
Some vendors no longer include an invoice or packing slip when they ship verifying that the delivered publication follows policy. To assist in ensuring that the item can be delivered, written verification that the publication was purchased from the approved vendor must be provided. This can be done by:
- Requesting a gift receipt be included with the package at the time of purchase.
- Sending the prisoner a copy of the invoice provided to the purchaser by the internet vendor. The invoice may be sent via US mail or by e-mail through J-pay.
Certain publications cannot be sent to prisoners because they have been determined to violate MDOC policy.
