Offender and Case Management System

The department implemented a new offender and case management system called COMS. COMS is a multi-module suite that replaces 20+ legacy systems and manual processes across 40+ business units, including Case Management, Food Service Management, Healthcare (EHR), Pharmacy, and more. The project is already helping to streamline information and department processes while modernizing operations. The roughly $40 million project is in its final stages of implementation and the last legacy systems are expected to be retired in 2027.

Package Scanners

The department has implemented an advanced baggage and parcel inspection systems to screen packages, mail, and visitor belongings. These scanners are deployed at facility entry points and warehouses to assist in detecting illicit materials, synthetic drugs, and hidden contraband.

Body Scanners

The department has implemented body scanners at its facilities to assist in scanning individuals and items coming into correctional facilities. These scanners provide additional assistance in detecting illicit materials such as synthetic drugs, weapons, and hidden contraband. 

Statewide Wifi Cabling Installations

The Michigan Department of Corrections is actively rolling out statewide Wi-Fi cabling and access points to modernize its facilities. This infrastructure supports educational platforms and secure tablets, allowing incarcerated individuals to seamlessly access up-to-date curriculum, vocational training, and virtual instruction as they prepare to reenter communities.
