Veterans and Service Members

If you are a veteran, service member, or their spouse or dependent child, there may be additional educational benefits, grants, and support services available to help you reach your goals.

Federal Resources and Scholarships

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides education and training benefits to help you pay for college, find the right school or training program, and get career counseling. Learn more online at VA Education and Training Benefits. If you have questions about VA education benefits or the GI Bill, the VA is the best place to go for information. You can contact them through online chat or by phone.

Michigan-specific Scholarships

In addition to federal resources, there are Michigan-specific programs to support veterans, service members, and their families. These grants can be used at a community college or university:

  • If you are a National Guard service member, you may qualify for the State Tuition Assistance Program. Visit the Michigan Department of Military & Veteran Affairs to learn more and see if you qualify.
  •  If you are less than 26 years old, you may qualify for the Michigan Children of Veterans Tuition Grant. Visit Mi Student Aid to learn more and see if you qualify.

If you have a question about federal or state education benefits—or aren’t sure where to start—we are here to help. Call the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency at 1-800-MICH-VET.

On Campus Support

Community colleges across Michigan are committed to supporting the needs of student veterans, service members, and their families. The Michigan’s Veteran-Friendly Schools program works with colleges to help their staff members understand and respond to the unique needs of military-connected students. Look for a page for veterans on your college’s website to learn more. Also, be sure to ask your college about programs and services such as:

  • Active student-operated clubs or associations
  • Veteran-specific career services, resources, and advising
  • A staff member on campus designated to support veterans
  • Policies to evaluate and award credit based on prior military training and experience
