Online Job Advertisements Show Continued Growth into July

Due to a recent policy change from a large online job board, Lightcast Developer, the third-party source of this job demand data, has shifted its methodology. MCDA is monitoring changes as they appear in the data across the state. Notably, recent data shifts are potentially procedural rather than practical. Recent data may be revised as Lightcast Developer continues to make adjustments.

In July 2025, 194,000 online job advertisements were posted in Michigan. This was an increase of 20,200 (+11.6 percent) from the previous month and nearly 16,100 (+9.0 percent) from July 2024. Of the ads in July, nearly 81,200 were newly posted, meaning they did not carry over from the previous month.

In July, three counties accounted for 42.1 percent of the total online job advertisements: Wayne (16.4 percent), Oakland (16.0 percent), and Kent (9.7 percent).

General medical and surgical hospitals, Limited-service restaurants, and Offices of physicians (except mental health specialists) were the industries with the most online job postings. These industries accounted for 4.4 percent, 3.4 percent, and 2.5 percent of the total monthly advertisements, respectively. While General medical and surgical hospitals and Limited-service restaurants frequently lead the industry advertisements, July marked the first time in 2025 that Offices of physicians (except mental health specialists) ranked among the top three most advertised industries.

Occupation Spotlight: Healthcare support occupations

According to the Michigan statewide long-term employment projections spanning 2022-2032, Healthcare support occupations are projected to have the largest numeric and percentage growth in employment of the major occupation groups. In July, there were nearly 10,300 online job advertisements for Healthcare support occupations. This was an increase of 1,100 (+12.5 percent) ads from June 2025 and an increase of 1,000 (+10.3 percent) ads from July 2024.

Just over half of the jobs posted for this occupation group listed a minimum education requirement. A minimum education requirement lists the lowest level of education an employer will accept, but employers may prefer a higher level than what is listed. Of the jobs that listed a minimum education required, 88.0 percent requested a high school diploma or GED, 8.5 percent requested an associate degree, and 3.5 percent requested a bachelor’s degree or higher.

The Healthcare support occupations group is made up of 17 detailed occupations. Among them, Home health and personal care aides accounted for 42.4 percent of the group’s advertisements, the largest share of any of the occupations. In July, this occupation had the fourth largest number of job postings statewide. It is projected to increase by 17.4 percent between 2022 and 2032, a growth of roughly 14,800 jobs. Other notable occupations within this group include Medical assistants and Nursing assistants, which made up 16.0 percent and 13.5 percent of this group’s postings, respectively.

While Healthcare support occupations are in demand throughout Michigan, each prosperity region shows different levels of demand. In July, the Northwest Prosperity Region posted just under 480 job ads for these occupations—the largest regional share at 6.7 percent. In contrast, the South Central Prosperity Region posted 470 ads, accounting for the smallest share at 3.3 percent.

In July, the Northwest Prosperity Region had the largest share of its online job advertisements come from Healthcare support occupations than any other region.
