Labor Force Levels in Michigan Works! Macomb/St. Clair Decline Over the Year

There were nearly 529,000 individuals in the labor force in the Michigan Works! Macomb/St. Clair region in August 2025. This accounted for 10.5 percent of Michigan’s total labor force. Since August 2024, the region’s labor force contracted by 0.8 percent. Michigan Works! Macomb/St. Clair joined Oakland County Michigan Works! and SEMCA Michigan Works! as the only regions to observe two straight Augusts of labor force declines.

Compared to August 2019, Michigan Works! Macomb/St. Clair’s labor force has dipped 2.0 percent. The region’s share of the state’s total labor force has decreased 0.3 percentage points. Since August 2019, Michigan has seen a 1.0 percent increase in labor force. However, there was a decrease of 0.7 percent since August 2024.

Michigan Works! Macomb/St. Clair reported a 4.1 percent unemployment rate in August 2025, down from 4.5 percent in August 2024. The unemployment rate remained elevated compared to August 2023 (3.8 percent). Michigan’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate measured 5.0 percent in August 2025, up 0.1 percentage points from last year.
