Spotlight: Religious, Grantmaking, Civic, Professional, and Similar Organizations Industry

Nonprofit organizations can be categorized as part of the Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional, and similar organizations industry. This industry contains organizations that fund charitable causes, advocate for causes that support the public good, create grants for various causes, or defend the interests of their members. In October, there were nearly 1,600 online job advertisements for this industry — a 4.1 percent increase from September and a 2.6 percent increase from October 2024.

Although the number of advertisements for this industry increased both over the month and year in October, the total number of new postings during the first 10 months of 2025 was the lowest recorded since 2020. According to the Michigan statewide long-term employment projections for 2022–2032, total employment in this industry is expected to decline by an average of 0.4 percent annually. This projected decline aligns with the reduced demand in the first 10 months of 2025. However, a projected reduction in total employment does not mean there will be no job openings. As employees leave the labor force or transfer to different industries, there will be job availability.

While advertisements for the Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional, and similar organizations industry were posted in all of Michigan’s regions, the Detroit Metro Prosperity Region accounted for 45.5 percent of the advertisements in October. Though it did not contain the largest number of advertisements, the Southeast Prosperity Region had the largest share (1.2 percent) of its job postings coming from this industry.

Three-quarters of the jobs posted for this industry listed a minimum education requirement. A minimum education requirement lists the lowest level of education an employer will accept, but employers may prefer a higher level than what is listed. Of the jobs that listed a minimum education required, 51.3 percent requested a high school diploma or GED, 8.4 percent requested an associate degree, and 40.3 percent requested a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Because the organizations posting online job advertisements for this industry can vary widely in their goals, they require varying skills and qualifications. The baseline skills that were most frequently requested from job postings in this industry were communication, computer literacy, and management. These skills appeared in 50.6 percent, 24.7 percent, and 21.5 percent of advertisements, respectively. Other than a valid driver’s license, the certifications most requested were CPR (11.3 percent), first aid (5.8 percent), and teaching (4.5 percent).
