November Sees a Drop in Michigan’s Online Job Postings

In November 2025, just under 171,700 online job advertisements were posted in Michigan. This was a reduction of 9,700 ads (-5.3 percent) from the previous month and a growth of 9,600 ads (+5.9 percent) compared to November 2024. Of the total online job ads, roughly 61,900 were newly posted, meaning that they did not carry over from the previous month.

The occupations that made up the largest share of the online job advertisements in November were Registered nurses (4.5 percent), Retail salespersons (3.8 percent), and Home health and personal care aides (2.6 percent). These occupations have been the most sought after in each month of 2025. While the number of ads decreased over the month, some of the most advertised occupations still experienced increases. Of the occupations that had 1,000 or more online job advertisements in both October and November, Driver/sales workers (+4.8 percent); First-line supervisors of food preparation and serving workers (+2.4 percent); and Sales representatives of services, except advertising, insurance, financial services, and travel (+2.1 percent) had the largest over-the-month increases.

Spotlight: Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools

The Colleges, universities, and professional schools industry consists of establishments that primarily offer academic courses and grant baccalaureate and graduate-level degrees. In November, there were nearly 4,000 online job advertisements for this industry. This marked a decrease of 500 ads (-11.3 percent) from the previous month and a drop of over 700 ads (-15.2 percent) year-over-year. From January through November, unique job postings in this industry continued to lag prior years, with year-to-date totals reaching their lowest point since 2020.

Regions holding some of the larger universities in the state were responsible for a significant portion of the ads in this industry. The Southeast Prosperity Region led with 40.4 percent of postings, followed by the Detroit Metro Prosperity Region (14.0 percent) and the West Michigan Prosperity Alliance (12.5 percent). In the Southeast Prosperity Region, the largest contributors were the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, and Hillsdale College.

In November, the Southeast Prosperity Region accounted for 40.4 percent of the online job advertisements in the Colleges, universities, and professional schools industry.

In November, 81.8 percent of the jobs posted for the Colleges, universities, and professional schools industry listed a minimum education requirement. A minimum education requirement lists the lowest level of education an employer will accept, but employers may prefer a higher level than what is listed. Of the postings that listed a minimum education required, 26.9 percent requested a high school diploma or GED, and 11.7 percent requested an associate degree. The remaining 61.4 percent requested a bachelor’s degree or higher—much larger than the share for all job postings across all industries requesting a bachelor’s degree or higher, 38.7 percent.

Online job advertisements for this industry included many occupations, but the most frequently posted roles were Postsecondary teachers (11.1 percent); Registered nurses (7.1 percent); and Health technologists and technicians, all other (5.3 percent). Due to the wide range of occupations in this industry, the skills requested varied from ad to ad; however, communication (46.5 percent), research (29.9 percent), and management (28.8 percent) were the most requested baseline skills.
