Acetaminophen During Pregnancy

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is committed to ensuring the health and safety of Michigan families and providing timely state guidance to health care providers and residents that adheres to the highest scientific, evidence-based standards.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)  and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), continue to support the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy when taken in moderation. MDHHS supports this recommendation from ACOG and SMFM, the leading professional organizations for obstetricians. These recommendations are solidly grounded in science and comprehensive reviews of the literature.

Additionally, according to ACOG, acetaminophen is one of the few options available to pregnant patients to treat pain and fever, which can be harmful to a woman and a baby during pregnancy when left untreated.

How will my family benefit from MIHP?

The Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP) is free for Medicaid eligible pregnant women, infants up to age one and their families. MIHP providers help pregnant women and families with newborns understand how to stay healthy. All pregnant women, infants and their families enrolled in MIHP have care plans developed just for them.

When you enroll in MIHP, a team of nurses, social workers, nutrition professionals, lactation consultants and infant mental health specialists will work with you, your doctor, your health plan, and providers in your community to make sure you receive services to keep you and your baby healthy. We hope you will check us out!
