Ambrose Lake State Forest Campground
This quaint, rustic campground is nestled on the shore of Ambrose Lake and offers excellent fishing and paddling opportunities. The campground offers 25 sites for tents and RVs, including accessible sites #6 and #8. The campground is moderately shaded, and the campsites are large and spacious with generous room between each site.
There's a boat launch on the south side and carry-in access for kayaks and canoes on the north. The Ogemaw Hills Pathway offers trails for hiking and biking, and is 5.5 miles northwest from the campground.
The campground is located 11 miles north of West Branch via South Fairview and Houghton Creek roads.

A boating access site is located on Ambrose Lake.
Fishing
Bass, blue gill, crappie and pike are caught in Ambrose Lake.
Hunting
This campground provides access to state land open to hunting. Firearm hunting is not allowed within 450 feet of an occupied dwelling.
ORV trails or routes
The operation of an ORV and snowmobile between the campground and nearby trails is allowed. The campground provides direct access to 9 miles of ORV/ATV trails, connecting to the Michigan Cross Country Cycle Trail and the Ogemaw Hills Trail (5 miles south). All other ORV use within the campground is prohibited.
Paddling
Paddling is popular on Ambrose Lake. Carry-in access is located on the northwest side of the campground and directly at some of the campsites.

What to expect, finding a site
These rustic campgrounds offer stunning river and lakefront settings, perfect for fishing, boating, and paddling. Here's what you can expect:
- No reservations. Sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- There are vault toilets.
- Potable (drinking) water is available from a hand-pump well.
- No electrical available.
- Overnight fees ($20 for most sites) and registration procedures are posted at the information kiosk at each campground.
- Camping is limited to a 15-day maximum stay.
- One camping unit and six people are allowed per site.
