Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today paved the way for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to deliver on his friendly wager following the Los Angeles Lakers loss to the Detroit Pistons Tuesday evening in which the Pistons clinched the 2004 NBA Title.

Granholm shipped to Schwarzenegger, via United Parcel Service, a Pistons jersey which he has agreed to wear while sitting at his desk enjoying a warm baked pasty from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a refreshing cool Vernors, and a dessert of chocolate covered Michigan cherries.  Granholm’s package included Vernors soda, packages of chocolate covered cherries, and a note explaining that pasties are being sent directly to the California governor from three pasty shops in the Upper Peninsula:  Lawry’s Pasty Shop in Marquette, LaPanteria Bakery in Bessemer, and Pasty.com in Calumet.

To make certain the moment is captured on film so that a photograph of Schwarzenegger honoring the bet can be returned to Granholm, she included a Kodak disposable camera.

“The Piston’s determination and cohesiveness are a metaphor for Detroit and for the state of Michigan,” Granholm said.  “They are astonishing proof of what can be achieved when teamwork and a commitment to excellence are combined.  They’ve earned this championship. We are inspired by them and proud that they represent the city of Detroit and all of Michigan.”

The Detroit Pistons clinched the NBA championship Tuesday, June 15, at the Palace of Auburn Hills.  This is the Pistons first championship title since 1990.
