What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a national service program designed to strengthen citizenship and the ethic of service by engaging thousands of Americans on a full-time or part-time basis to help communities address their toughest challenges. To support the placement of AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in communities, the AmeriCorps agency administers grants at the federal level and works in partnership with states to develop service programs and create a community-based national service network. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) is the administrative agent for Michigan's AmeriCorps.

Funds Available For New and Recompeting Michigan's AmeriCorps Programs
Federal funds are currently available to support new and recompeting Michigan's AmeriCorps programs to start in the fall of 2025 for a 12-month program cycle.
Youth Mental Health Corps
In response to America’s youth mental health crisis, Michigan is joining forces with 10 other states, the Schultz Family Foundation, Pinterest and AmeriCorps to recruit, train, and deploy the nation’s first Youth Mental Health Corps to help young people access critical mental health resources.
AmeriCorps NCCC
AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, team-based residential service program for 18–26-year-olds. AmeriCorps members serving in the NCCC program represent a wide variety of socioeconomic, cultural, geographic, and educational backgrounds. AmeriCorps members serving in the NCCC program are assigned to one of four regional campuses and then placed into teams ranging between 8-12 members. The teams complete a variety of service projects, which are generally 3 to 13 weeks in duration, and respond to local communities’ needs throughout the United States and territories.

Michigan's AmeriCorps Alum Spotlight
Jon Hamilton served as an AmeriCorps member with the Michigan Education Corps from 2020-2024. The Michigan Education Corps, administered by Hope Network, is a replication of the transformational Minnesota Reading Corps. AmeriCorps members advance more than 3,000 students toward becoming proficient in reading and mathematics.
Michigan's AmeriCorps Member of the Month
Jill Smoot is a second-year member with the Crim Sports Corps AmeriCorps Program at the Crim Fitness Foundation. The Crim Sports Corps assists with delivering after-school and summer sports programs to youth in the City of Flint. Smoot is the program’s only second year member, allowing her to bring experience and expertise to both her service recipients and her fellow cohort.

Michigan's AmeriCorps Alum Spotlight
Kelly MacDonald served with the AmeriCorps READY program in Detroit through Wayne State University from 2023-2024. AmeriCorps READY AmeriCorps members educate citizens and engage them in efforts to improve climate change resiliency through identification and intervention of indoor and outdoor environmental hazards, improvement of residential energy efficiency, implementation of green infrastructure, and clean water and air stewardship opportunities. Activities include community outreach and engagement, green infrastructure installation and demonstration, healthy home assessments, and resident education.
