Deer Lake (delisted)
Deer Lake has been delisted as an Area of Concern (AOC)
The Deer Lake AOC, located in central Marquette County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and is connected to Lake Superior by the Carp River. Disposal of mining chemicals, byproducts and materials resulted in the contamination of sediments with high levels of mercury. The lake was also historically impacted by inadequately treated sewage discharges from the area.
On October 30, 2014, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced that the Deer Lake AOC was "delisted" or removed from the international list of Great Lakes AOCs following successful restoration efforts.
Although Deer Lake is no longer an AOC, there are still chemicals in the fish. View the fish consumption guidelines for this waterbody in the Upper Peninsula Eat Safe Fish Guide.
This waterbody is easy to access and has a high likelihood of catching fish, which designates it as a Family Friendly Fishing Waters location by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).The rules and regulations for this waterbody can be found in the DNR Fishing Guide.
