Hayes State Park is located on Wamplers and Round lakes in the heart of the Irish Hills. This area is know for its rolling hills and natural green beauty.

The 654-acre park offers a modern campground (with lots of midweek availability), a large swimming area, two boating access sites, a fishing pier, trails, picnic areas, interpretive programs and more. There are opportunities for boating, paddling, fishing, camping and more.


Within 5 miles, there are two other state parks that offer different experiences. Cambridge Junction Historic State Park is home to the Walker Tavern Historic Site, a farmer's market, a reconstructed 1840s barn, vintage baseball games and more. Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve is known for its quiet setting, wildlife viewing and 5-mile trail. The park is also close to Michigan International Speedway, Hidden Lake Gardens, unique shops, antique stores, wine tasting, golfing, restaurants and other tourist attractions. Take a video tour »

There is a picnic shelter located in the park’s day-use area that includes picnic tables, charcoal grills and electrical service (reservations only). Shelter reservations can be made 12 months in advance at MiDNRReservations.com. There are connected modern restrooms.

Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent at the campground office Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends. During the weekend, rentals are available to campers only.

JR’s Food Concessions runs a general store in the beach house located in the day-use area on Wamplers Lake. They sell food and camping items and rent float mats.

The all-sports Wamplers Lake is known for many species, including largemouth bass, crappie and bluegill. The no-wake Round Lake is known is a kettle lake popular for pan fishing.

Metal detecting is allowed in certain park areas. Please consult the park map for designated locations and review applicable regulations. Only registered campers can metal detect in campgrounds.

Seasonal naturalists offer nature-based programming at the park during the summer and/or fall. Check the park's explorer program calendar for dates, locations and topics.

Paddling is popular on the park’s two lakes.

Pets are allowed along the shoreline other than the designated swim beach. Pets must always be on a 6-foot leash and under an owner’s immediate control. All pet waste must be properly disposed of in trash receptacles.

The park’s sanitation station is in the modern campground. There is potable water available and three lanes.

A buoyed swim area is located on Wamplers Lake.

The day-use area is situated on Wamplers Lake (all sports), and the modern campground is situated on Round Lake (no wake).

    There are two mini cabins, sites 85 and 87, located in the modern campground. Each cabin sleeps four people and includes a counter with stools and an electric wall heater. Site 85 has as a set of bunk beds, and site 87 has a futon and one set of bunk beds. The cabins have electricity.

    Each cabin has a covered concrete patio, picnic table, fire pit and waist-high cook grill outdoors.

    You must provide your own linens and cookware.

    The modern campground is set along Round Lake and is divided into two loops, the west and east loops. There are 180 campsites, two mini cabins and two tiny houses. The campground has a mix of sunny and shady sites. All sites have an asphalt pad and 20- or 30-amp electrical service. Sites 1-10 offer full water hookup. There is a designated swimming beach on Wamplers Lake, located across the street in the day-use area.

    The Red and Blue trails are located between the two campground loops.

    The park's two tiny houses, Superior and Wolverine, are located in modern campground. They sleep four people with a full-size bed and two single beds in the loft. The Superior tiny house is accessible.

    The tiny houses have electrical service, including air conditioning, ceiling lights and a bathroom (with toilet, shower and sink). Amenities include a couch, small table and chairs, mini fridge, cooktop stove, kitchen sink, microwave and coffee maker. There is a deck/porch, picnic table and fire pit outdoors.

    Guests are required to provide their own bedding and cookware.
