Individuals interested in becoming a corrections officer should apply online or at a recruitment event. Applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview, including the completion of a fitness test. Hired applicants are required to complete an 8-week paid officer academy that takes place four times per year.
Officer Hiring and Qualifications
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, pass background and fitness checks, and meet one of the following: possess 15 semester credit hours in a college program (or earn them within 24 months of being hired), OR have two years of previous corrections officer experience, OR have completed basic training in the military, to meet minimum qualifications.
Officer Salary and Benefits
Corrections Officers have the opportunity to make up to $75,000 in as little as 3 years and are offered other great benefits such as quality health insurance, paid time off, and a competitive retirement plan which includes an automatic 4% state contribution and up to an additional 5% matching contribution to your 401K, which together could provide over a million dollars for retirement after a 30-year career.
