Granholm Issues Invitation to 4th Graders

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monday, December 16, 2002

LANSING - Governor-Elect Jennifer M. Granholm today issued a special invitation to every fourth grade student in Michigan to attend an Inaugural event and to bring along their parents.

"Traditionally in Michigan schools, fourth grade is when students are delving into the rich history of our state," Granholm said. "This is an historic transition, and I hope our children and their families look at it as an opportunity to participate in the history that they are studying in school."

The Michigan Inaugural Committee has planned five Family Celebration events around the state that will be attended by Governor-Elect Granholm, Lt. Governor-Elect John Cherry and their families. They are:

  • Saturday, December 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the University Pavilion at the University of Michigan-Flint in Flint;

  • Sunday, December 29, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Southfield Civic Center in Southfield;

  • Wednesday, January 1 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Lansing Center in Lansing;

  • Friday, January 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids;

  • Saturday, January 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Upper Peninsula Children's Museum in Marquette.

All Family Celebration events are free of charge and will feature many children's activities. Another free event for Detroit area families will be the Gubernatorial Receiving Line at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The receiving line will feature the Governor-Elect and her family and Lt. Governor-Elect John Cherry and his family. It will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 5.

"The Family Celebrations are intended to give anyone who wants to meet the Governor, to shake her hand, and to witness history in the making the opportunity to do so," said Debbie Dingell, a chair of the Michigan Inaugural Committee. "We hope that teachers will encourage their students to take part in this special time in Michigan history."

The Family Celebrations and Gubernatorial Receiving Line are free of charge, but an RSVP is strongly recommended. To RSVP, please call toll-free 1-888-875-0055.
