Governor Granholm Fills Vacancies in Wayne County 3rd Circuit Court

March 28, 2003

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today made two judicial appointments naming Judge Leslie Hoagland and David Groner to the Wayne County 3rd Circuit Court.

“Leslie brings an abundance of intelligence and experience to the bench,” Granholm said. “She will bring her record of integrity and fairness to the circuit court and will serve Michigan’s citizens well.”

Hoagland, 47, of Highland Park, served the 30th District Court in Highland Park as District Court Judge beginning in 1987. From 1988 to 1989, and 1997 to 2001, she was the court’s chief judge.

Previously, Hoagland was an assistant attorney general, serving under Attorney General Frank Kelley from 1983 to 1986. She was assigned to the Public Employment Division where she was responsible for handling discrimination cases filed against the state, union grievances, and election matters. Hoagland also served in the Social Services Division where she managed civil cases involving the Department of Social Services, as well as administrative hearings regarding licenses issued by the Department of Social Services.

Hoagland earned her law degree from the University of Detroit Law School and a bachelor’s of arts degree from Wayne State University.

“David is simply bursting at the seams with energy and excitement at the prospect of serving the public,” Granholm said.

Groner, 45, of Grosse Pointe Park, is a private practice attorney in Detroit. He has been practicing since 1985. He has handled numerous civil, criminal, and probate matters in both the state and federal court system.

Groner worked as a law clerk for the Honorable James S. Thorburn in Oakland County Circuit Court from 1981 to 1985.

He earned his law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy Law School and his bachelor’s of arts degree from the University of Michigan.

Hoagland succeeds Judge Karen Fort-Hood, who was elected to the Court of Appeals, and Groner replaces Judge Robert L. Evans who has retired from the bench.
