Governor statement regarding Pfizer Corporation
April 23, 2003
Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm issued the following statement after meeting today with Dr. Hank McKinnell, Chairman of Pfizer Corporation.
“For longer than any of us can remember, Michigan has been an integral part of the world’s pharmaceutical industry, first through Upjohn, Parke Davis and more recently through Pharmacia. This industry is a part of Michigan’s history, and I intend to maintain it as part of Michigan’s future.
“Dr. McKinnell and I enjoyed a frank conversation about the future Pfizer and Michigan can share, as well as the challenges each of us face. From my perspective, keeping Michigan jobs for Michigan families is a priority, and I impressed upon him our desire to keep Pfizer and Pharmacia jobs in Michigan.
Dr. McKinnell confirmed that Michigan will continue to be Pfizer’s largest and most important business location in the United States.
“We have an excellent workforce, a spectacular quality of life, and a public sector willing to go the extra mile to keep businesses and jobs in Michigan. We will work tirelessly to that end.
“I am pleased that Dr. McKinnell and his team were willing to discuss a public-private partnership for the future of both Pfizer and Michigan. I am confident the state will have an excellent relationship with Pfizer both in the short and long terms.”
