July 21, 2003

NORTHERN MICHIGAN – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm announced that Stacy Welling of Powers recently joined the staff of her Upper Peninsula Office.  Welling will serve as the Governor’s northern Michigan representative, along with Matt Johnson, Director for the Upper Peninsula Office.

Welling holds a bachelor’s of science degree in business management and public relations, as well as a master’s degree in public administration from Northern Michigan University.  While pursuing her degree, she worked for the City of Marquette and Marquette General Hospital.  Most recently, she was employed by OSF St. Francis Hospital in the area of Community Relations and Development.

“The Upper Peninsula office is doing a great job being responsive to the needs of the U.P. and northern Michigan,” Granholm said.  “With the addition of Stacy Welling to our team, we will be able to cover even more territory and more issues for the citizens of the U.P. and northern Michigan.”

Johnson has served as Director since January.  Before his current position, he served as the District Director for Congressman Bart Stupak, covering issues in the sprawling 1st Congressional District.   Johnson graduated in 1994 from Northern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in public administration and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public administration.

The Upper Peninsula Office serves as a liaison for the residents of northern Michigan regarding many issues dealing with rural public policy, special projects, and coordination with local officials.
