LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the appointment of Robert K. Morris as chairperson of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Advisory Commission.
“Robert’s extensive background in transportation issues and his appreciation for traffic safety will be invaluable to the commission as it deliberates critical issues for people traveling our roadways,” Granholm said. “I am honored to have him serve on the commission.”
A resident of Canton, Morris currently serves as Assistant Wayne County Executive. Previously, he was Wayne County legislative director.
Prior to working in Wayne County, Morris served as an assistant administrator in the Bureau of Urban and Public Transportation for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) from 1991 to 1993. He served as legislative director for MDOT from 1986 and 1990 and was the acting deputy director in the Bureau of Urban and Public Transportation for MDOT in 1987.
Morris earned his master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University and holds a bachelor’s of science degree also from Western Michigan University.
He succeeds Miles Handy whose term has expired. Morris is appointed to a term that begins August 12, 2003, and expires May 27, 2006. His appointment is subject to advice and consent of the Senate.
The Governor’s Traffic Safety Advisory Commission works to identify traffic safety challenges and develops, promotes, and implements strategies to address those challenges.
