LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the appointment of six members to the Temporary Oversight Committee (TOC) called for in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Detroit Medical Center. The MOU was entered into by the Governor, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and the Detroit Medical Center in July to ensure the continuation of services at Detroit Receiving and Hutzel Women’s hospitals.
Appointments announced by the Governor include:
Vernice Davis Anthony, president and CEO of the Greater Detroit Health Council, appointed by the Governor.
Van E. Conway of Conway, MacKenzie & Dunleavy, attorneys at law, recommended by Ficano.
Robert B. Johnson, principal and owner of Robert B. Johnson and Associates, health care management advisors, recommended by Kilpatrick.
Janet Olszewski, director of the Michigan Department of Community Health, designated by the Governor to serve as chair of the committee.
Juliette Thorpe Okotie-Eboh, Ph.D., vice president of community affairs for the MGM Grand, recommended by Ficano.
Sean Werdlow, chief financial officer for the City of Detroit, recommended by Kilpatrick.
Susan Work Martin, associate vice president for academic affairs at Grand Valley State University, has also been appointed by the Governor to serve as an ex-officio member of the committee.
The TOC will make funds available to the DMC on a monthly basis from a maximum of $50 million that was agreed to by state lawmakers and the Governor as part of the 2004 budget agreement. The funds, which include federal, state, and local dollars, will be available to the DMC each month only after the committee has determined sufficient financial need.
