Governor Appoints Bunn to Michigan Community Service Commission

September 12, 2003

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today appointed Mary “Elizabeth” Bunn as a member of the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC).  The commission is a state agency charged with funding and supporting programs to encourage Michigan residents to volunteer. The commission is chaired by First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern.

“Elizabeth is dedicated to strengthening and building volunteer and mentoring programs across Michigan,” Granholm said.  “She will help provide children access to caring and responsible adult role models who can make all the difference in the world.”

Bunn, of Detroit, currently serves as secretary-treasurer of the UAW, the highest post held by a woman in UAW history.  She was elected to the position at the UAW’s 33rd Constitutional Convention in June 2002.

Bunn has been an employee of the International Union, UAW since 1985.  She first served as an associate general counsel of the UAW assigned to the president’s office.  In 1995, she was appointed as an administrative assistant to then UAW president Stephen P. Yokich.  Bunn was elected vice president of the union in 1998.

In addition to her position as secretary-treasurer, she also directs the UAW Technical Office and Professional (TOP) Department and is the director of the UAW Women’s Department.

Bunn earned a law degree from Wayne State University Law School and holds a bachelor’s of arts degree from the University of Michigan.
