Governor Granholm Announces Recent Appointments

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm announced the following recent appointments to various state boards and commissions:

Teacher Tenure Commission

  • Steven Horn of Beverly Hills, chief operating officer for the Detroit Zoological Society, is appointed for a term expiring September 1, 2006.  Mr. Horn succeeds Judith Rapanos whose term has expired.

  • Gerald Dawkins of Grand Rapids, superintendent of Saginaw City Schools, is appointed to represent superintendents of schools for a term expiring August 31, 2008.  Mr. Dawkins succeeds Charles S. Andrews whose term has expired.

  • Sharon Peters of Lansing, president and CEO of Michigan’s Children, a statewide, multi-issue advocacy organization that acts as a policy voice for children, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring August 31, 2008.  Ms. Peters succeeds James Cameron, Jr. whose term has expired.

  • Dirk Zuschlag of Wixom, secondary teacher at Waterford Kettering High School, is appointed to represent classroom instructors for a term expiring August 31, 2008.  Mr. Zuschlag succeeds Gay Ann Travis whose term has expired.

The Teacher Tenure Commission renders decisions on appeals by teachers who contest decisions made by their local school boards concerning their tenure rights.

Michigan Board of Social Work

  • Gail Hauser-Hurley, of Temperance, is appointed to represent social workers for a term expiring December 31, 2007.  Ms. Hauser-Hurley succeeds Paul Lang, Jr. whose term has expired.

  • Joseph Kort, of Grosse Pointe Woods, is appointed to represent certified social workers for a term expiring December 31, 2007.  Mr. Kort succeeds Beth Reimel whose term has expired.

These appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board

  • Lore Rogers of Whitmore Lake, legal advocacy director for the Domestic Violence Project, Inc./Safe House in Ann Arbor, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring September 30, 2004.  Ms. Rogers succeeds Michelle Hayes who has resigned.

The Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board is responsible for administering state and federal funding for domestic violence shelters and advocacy services, developing and recommending policy, and developing and providing technical assistance and training.

This appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Sentate.

State Employees’ Retirement Board

  • Calvin Frappier, II, of Lansing, is appointed to represent retirees for a term expiring July 31, 2006.  Mr. Frappier succeeds John H. Reurink whose term has expired.

  • Lynda Taylor-Lewis, of Detroit, is appointed to represent employees for a term expiring July 31, 2006.  Ms. Taylor-Lewis succeeds Janine M. Winters whose term has expired.

The State Employees’ Retirement Board oversees the retirement system for state employees in Michigan.

These appointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
