LANSING -- Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today applauded the decision of the Oakland University and Wayne State University governing boards for agreeing to accept her challenge to not raise tuition beyond the rate of inflation.
“I am thrilled that Oakland and Wayne State universities have decided to hold the line against tuition increases and keep the American dream of college alive for our young people,” said Granholm. “Agreeing to not raise tuition higher than the rate of inflation sends a clear message to Michigan students and families that Oakland and Wayne State universities are committed to helping them reach their goals and is committed to keeping higher education affordable.”
Oakland and Wayne State join Michigan State University in accepting the Governor’s challenge to tighten their belts and keep higher education affordable. The presidents of Western Michigan University and Saginaw Valley State University have announced they are prepared to recommend to their governing boards that they accept the tuition pledge as well.
Governor Granholm reiterated her challenge to Michigan’s universities and community colleges last week during her State of the State address. In her address, the Governor highlighted the importance of higher education in today’s knowledge-based economy and encouraged universities and colleges to keep college accessible and affordable for all Michigan students.
