Granholm Applauds Commission Appointment of Mitch Irwin to Lead Department of Agriculture

July 13, 2005

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today issued the following statement on the Michigan Commission of Agriculture’s decision to appoint Mitch Irwin to succeed Dan Wyant as Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

I applaud the Agriculture Commission on its decision to appoint Mitch Irwin director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture.  As our director at the Department of Management and Budget, Mitch excelled at saving dollars and improving service for our citizens.  I’m certain he’ll use that same zeal for making government more effective to both protect our food supply and grow our agriculture industry.  From the perspective of public servant and private citizen, Mitch has a deep understanding of agriculture’s central place in Michigan’s economy and in our communities.  His natural leadership abilities will enable him to work with the Commission and other members of our Cabinet to build partnerships that will guide Michigan’s already robust agriculture sector to new heights and success.

Governor Granholm will move quickly to name a successor to Irwin as director of the Department of Management and Budget.  That successor is expected to be named prior to August 1 when Irwin begins his new duties.
