Governor Granholm's Weekly Radio Address Highlights Contributions of Michigan's Working Men and Women

September 2, 2005

LANSING – In her weekly radio address, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today paid tribute to the working men and women across Michigan, and those people working to provide relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

“With the effects of Hurricane Katrina impacting hundreds of thousands of lives in the South, this Labor Day is not only a time to honor the every day contributions of working men and women, but especially the extraordinary efforts of relief agencies, volunteers, our National Guard and government personnel, working around the clock to coordinate a massive relief effort,” Granholm said.

On Wednesday, Governor Granholm declared an energy emergency in Michigan and signed three executive orders to temporarily suspend state laws that restrict the supply of gasoline.  The emergency order provides the state with flexibility to meet any additional problems that arise in coming days.

Michigan is contributing to the relief effort with nearly 500 National Guard Troops heading south to assist with relief and recovery.  Michigan State Police is coordinating relief efforts on behalf of the state of Michigan.  Governor Granholm encouraged Michigan families to contribute to the relief efforts with donations to the Red Cross, Salvation Army or other disaster relief organizations.

This weekend Granholm will participate in the annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk with her family and thousands of citizens from across the state.

“This is always an incredible parade of Michigan values – family, community, tradition – all coming together on a bridge that unites our two peninsulas,” Granholm said.

The Governor’s weekly address is released each Friday at 10:00 a.m. and may be heard on broadcast stations across the state through an affiliation with the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.  The address will also be available on the Governor’s Website on Mondays as a podcast for general distribution to personal MP3 players and home computers.
