KUWAIT - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today helped served Thanksgiving dinner to hundreds of Michigan soldiers in Kuwait during a visit to American troops serving in the region. Granholm visited Kuwait, where more than a thousand Michigan soldiers are stationed, as part of a four governor delegation.
After serving dinner, the Governor met and dined with members of the 1072 Ordinance Company out of Detroit and the 107 Engineering Company from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Governor expressed her support for the troops and appreciation for their work and sacrifices, especially during the holiday season.
"Our Michigan troops are sacrificing so much for us - serving our country, and serving far away from home and family," Granholm said. "It's been an honor to shake their hands, hear their stories and hug them on behalf of their families who are missing them this Thanksgiving holiday."
Granholm's visit to Kuwait included meetings with senior Coalition military leadership and the Kuwaiti Minister of Defense and Speaker of Parliament. The Governor discussed the Michigan National Guard's role in the Global War on Terrorism.
"As Commander-in-Chief of the Michigan National Guard I am extremely proud of their efforts and those of Michigan men and women serving in all branches of our military," Granholm said. "I encourage all Michigan citizens to keep them in their thoughts and prayers until their safe return."
Joining Granholm on the Middle East visit are Governors Haley Barbour (R-MS), Sonny Perdue (R-GA) and Kathleen Sebelius (D-KS). The governors traveled to Kuwait at the invitation of the Departments of State and Defense.
