Granholm Committed to Transforming State, Providing Opportunity for All

January 5, 2007

Governor asks citizens to join her in claiming Next Michigan

LANSING - In her weekly radio address, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today echoed her inaugural address pledging her commitment to transform the state and provide opportunity to all citizens in Michigan.

"We know that our challenges have been decades in the making, and we know that full transformation doesn't happen overnight," Granholm said.  "But that is precisely why we will act with urgency and intelligence and with a boldness equal to the challenge we face."

Granholm vowed to continue to work tirelessly to implement her economic plan but said the Next Michigan will require hard work from everyone.  She called on the newly-elected Legislature to show courage as they develop economic and investment strategies in the face of a budget crisis and on Michigan citizens to seize the opportunity for retraining and encouraging their children to go to college.

Michigan's abundant natural resources, outstanding citizens, unmatched work ethic, first class universities, and incredible quality of life provide the foundation necessary to build a 21st century Michigan with a thriving economy and thriving communities.

In claiming the Next Michigan, Governor Granholm is committed to making Michigan all it can be:

  • A place where all citizens have the opportunity to grow and live a good life;

  • A place where every child goes to college and every displaced worker has the opportunity to be retrained for a new future;

  • A place where every citizen has access to affordable health care;

  • A place that grows companies that specialize in alternative energy; and,

  • A place whose cities are vibrant, alive with people, culture, energy, and jobs.

"In this moment, we will transform our state together," Granholm said.  "Ten million citizens, twenty million hands, each building and shaping the Next Michigan."
