Governor Granholm Announces Appointments, Reappointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:

Michigan Technological University Board of Control

Paul G. Ollila of Painesdale, former superintendent of Copper County Intermediate School District, is appointed for a term expiring December 31, 2016.  He succeeds Rodger Kershner whose term has expired. 

The Michigan Technological University Board of Control is responsible for the general supervision of the institution and the control and direction of all funds of the institution.  It also determines compensation for services and property, confers degrees, fixes tuition and other fees and charges, and promotes the purposes of the institution.

This appointment is subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards

Frederick F. Timpner of Farmington Hills, executive director of the Michigan Association of Police, is appointed to represent individuals nominated by the Michigan Association of Police for a term expiring November 1, 2009.

Richard R. Weiler of Sterling Heights, director of the Police Officers Labor Council, is appointed to represent individuals nominated by the Police Officers Labor Council of Michigan for a term expiring November 1, 2010.

Martin G. Bandemer of Macomb Township, president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, is reappointed to represent individuals nominated by a police association representing police officers employed by a police agency employing more than 15 percent of the police officers in this state for a term expiring November 1, 2012.

James W. DeVries of Grand Haven, business agent with the Police Officers Association of Michigan, is reappointed to represent individuals nominated by the Police Officers Association of Michigan for a term expiring November 1, 2012.

Kurt R. Jones of Cheboygan, director of public safety with the Cheboygan Department of Public Safety, is reappointed to represent individuals nominated by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police for a term expiring November 1, 2012.

Robert J. Pickell of Flushing, Genesee County Sheriff, is reappointed to represent elected county sheriffs nominated by the Michigan Sheriffs' Association for a term expiring November 1, 2012.

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards serves as the oversight commission for all law enforcement training funds and criminal justice training funds in Michigan.  The main focus of the commission is on professionalism, formal in-service training, and number of officers receiving training, as well as the institution of law enforcement training standards, implementation of a web-based information system available to all law enforcement, and award training grants that advance the objectives of the commission. 

These appointments and reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Firefighters Training Council

Michael G. Deprez of Sterling Heights, assistant fire chief for Sterling Heights Fire Department, is appointed to represent the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs for a term expiring December 31, 2011.  He succeeds David J. Purchase whose term has expired. 

The Firefighters Training Council is responsible for establishing standards, courses of study, certification of instructors, establishing regional training centers, and developing and administering mandatory certification examinations for firefighters in Michigan.

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Interagency Task Force on Employee Misclassification

Susan D. Agee of Laingsburg, administrator of discovery and tax enforcement with the Michigan Department of Treasury, is appointed to represent the tax enforcement division of Treasury for a term expiring December 31, 2012.  She succeeds Douglas B. Schafer whose term has expired.  

The Interagency Task Force on Employee Misclassification is charged with examining and evaluating misclassification enforcement mechanisms in Michigan and with making recommendations for more effective enforcement.

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Women's Commission

Thomas Wilson of Wyandotte, real estate facilitator for DTE Energy and founder of the Michigan Gender Equity Team, is appointed for a term expiring July 15, 2011.  He succeeds Rosa Morales who has resigned.

The Michigan Women's Commission, housed within the Department of Civil Rights, focuses on improving quality of life for women in the state by studying and reviewing the status of Michigan women, directing attention to critical issues that women face, recommending methods to overcome discrimination, promoting methods for women to develop their skills, conducting surveys and establishing advisory committees on vital issues, and recognizing the accomplishments of women in Michigan.

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
