April 9, 2009
LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today issued the following statement in response to President Obama's announcement that the General Services Administration will accelerate its purchase of new vehicles for the government fleet by investing funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to buy about 17,600 new, fuel efficient vehicles produced by American auto companies by June 1, 2009.
"This is good news for the American auto companies and the hundreds of thousands of families who rely on those companies for their livelihoods. Bolstering sales at these companies is the best way to protect jobs. I'm pleased that President Obama is choosing to buy American for the U.S. government and that he recognizes that our American workers turn out great, fuel-efficient products. Any increase in sales is - in the end - good for Michigan"
In mid-December, Governor Granholm called for accelerated purchase of American-made, fuel-efficient vehicles for the Michigan government auto fleet. Since that time, 1,435 orders have been placed.
