Governor Granholm Announces Appointments, Reappointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:     

State Community Corrections Board

Alfred Butzbaugh of Berrien Springs, judge for Berrien County Trial Court, is reappointed to represent circuit or recorders court judges for a term expiring March 29, 2013.

The State Community Corrections Board advises the Director of Corrections in developing goals, criteria, and guidelines for local governments in establishing community corrections programs.  It also determines grant guidelines for comprehensive corrections plans which are intended to provide safe, cost-effective alternatives to incarceration.  

This reappointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days. 

Certificate of Need Commission

James B. Falahee, Jr. of Portage, senior vice president of legal and legislative affairs and corporate compliance officer with Bronson Healthcare Group, is appointed to represent hospitals and Republicans for a term expiring April 9, 2010.  He succeeds Norma Hagenow who has resigned.

The Certificate of Need Commission, a bipartisan entity, reviews and determines the need for new institutional health services, facilities, or organizations being offered or developed in Michigan.

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.  

Civil Rights Commission

Bertram Marks of Detroit, principal attorney for Litigation Associates, is appointed to represent Democrats for a term expiring December 31, 2011.  He succeeds Kelvin W. Scott who has resigned.

Jared I. Rodriguez of Portland, senior vice president of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, is appointed to represent Republicans for a term expiring December 31, 2010.  He succeeds Margaret Van Houten who has resigned.

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission, a bipartisan entity, investigates alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, or physical or mental disabilities and works to secure the equal protection of such civil rights without discrimination.

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council

Kristen E. Columbus of Tecumseh, parent representative for Lenawee County's Early On Local Interagency Coordinating Committee, is appointed to represent a parents or guardians with a child with developmental disabilities, for a term expiring September 30, 2011.  She succeeds Randy Krause whose term has expired.

Theresa A. Arini of Holly, consultant for Capability Resources, is reappointed to represent individuals with developmental disabilities for a term expiring September 30, 2011.

Jacqueline S. Day of Lansing, volunteer at the Capital Area Center for Independent Living, is reappointed to represent local and non-governmental agencies and private nonprofit groups concerned with services for individuals with developmental disabilities for a term expiring September 30, 2011.

Pamela A. Hall of Lansing, department analyst for the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging, is reappointed to represent the protection and advocacy system in this state for a term expiring September 30, 2011.

Robin T. Sefton of Ann Arbor, chair of the Washtenaw Regional Interagency Consumer Council, is reappointed to represent individuals with developmental disabilities for a term expiring September 30, 2011.

The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council serves as an advocate for people with developmental disabilities. 

These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Michigan Education Trust Board of Directors

Susan Work Martin, Ph.D. of Ypsilanti, president of Eastern Michigan University, is appointed to represent presidents of state institutions of higher education for a term expiring December 31, 2009, and is also reappointed for a term expiring December 31, 2012.  She succeeds Michael Rao who has resigned.

Gail C. Mee, Ed.D. of Dearborn, president of Henry Ford Community College, is appointed to represent presidents of community or junior colleges for a term expiring December 31, 2009, and is also reappointed for a term expiring December 31, 2012.  She succeeds Albert Lorenzo who has resigned.

The Michigan Education Trust Board of Directors provides an avenue for families to invest in their children's future, enabling them to attend Michigan institutions of higher education.

These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Electrical Administrative Board

Rowland E. Cornish III of Lansing, president and CEO of Ro-Lyn Electrical, Inc., is reappointed to represent electrical contractors operating in this state for a term expiring August 10, 2013.

Richard W. Long of Waterford, national CAP director of the UAW International Union, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring August 10, 2013.

The Electrical Administrative Board, in addition to the inspection of wiring and its installation, establishes fees for inspection and appoints inspectors. 

These reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Strategic Economic Investment and Commercialization Board

Eric R. Gilbertson of Bay City, president of Saginaw Valley State University, is reappointed to represent public universities in Michigan other than Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Western Michigan University, or Michigan Technological University for a term expiring December 31, 2011.  He succeeds Michael Rao who has resigned.

Created as an independent entity within the Michigan Strategic Fund, the Strategic Economic Investment and Commercialization Board oversees the competitive grants and loans to Michigan institutions of higher education, Michigan research institutions, and Michigan nonprofit corporations for competitive edge technology projects.

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
