Governor Granholm Signs Legislation Continuing Tax Credits for Vehicles Donated to Charitable Organizations

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today signed legislation allowing Michigan taxpayers to continue claiming state income tax credits for donating vehicles to charitable organizations. The tax credit was set to expire after the 2009 tax year.
"Continuing the tax credit is beneficial in several ways," Granholm said. "A vehicle donor receives a tax credit, the charity receives income from the sale of the vehicle, and people are able to purchase a car or truck they otherwise couldn't afford."
A Michigan taxpayer can claim a state income tax credit of up to $50 for the value of a vehicle donated to a charitable organization. A married couple filing a joint return can claim up to $100 on their state tax return.
The bill signed by the governor today is Senate Bill 563 (PA 195), sponsored by State Senator Tom George (R-Kalamazoo).
