AFSCME Council 25 Institutional Unit Ratifies Tentative Agreement with Office of the State Employer

March 16, 2010

LANSING - AFSCME Council 25 today announced that the membership of the Institutional Unit has ratified a tentative agreement reached in February with the Office of the State Employer.

The agreement achieves AFSCME Council 25's share of the $50 million in employee savings assumed in the fiscal year 2010 state budget and provides structural change in the form of a new health-care plan for employees hired after April 1, 2010.

"Michigan's tough economy has put extraordinary pressure on the state budget," said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm.  "I appreciate the membership of AFSCME Council 25 stepping forward to help resolve our state's budgetary challenges by approving this agreement."

"During these difficult economic times, AFSCME has consistently tried to be part of the solution with its contributions," said Ed McNeil, special assistant to President Albert Garrett, AFSCME Council 25.

The Institutional Unit represents approximately 2,050 employees who work as resident care, physical and activities aides, youth specialists, domestic service aides, cooks, teachers, dental aides, and licensed practical nurses.
